The concept of industrial cleaning agents

What is dirt?

 Dirt is an unwanted deposit on the surface (or inside) of the substrate that reduces the functional use of the substrate or alters the clean image of the substrate.

Types of dirt

 (1) Classified by the shape of dirt

      ① Granular dirt   such as solid particles, microbial particles, etc.
       ② Membranous dirt   such as grease, polymer compounds, or inorganic precipitates forming a membranous substance on the surface of the substrate. This membrane can be solid or semi-solid. Some dirt is between granular and membranous, while others are dispersed in a solvent in a suspended state.
 (2) Classified by the chemical composition of dirt   According to this classification method, dirt can be divided into inorganic and organic categories.

 ① Inorganic dirt   such as scale, rust, and mud, which, from a chemical composition perspective, mostly belong to metal or non-metal oxides and hydrates or inorganic salts.

     A, Sulfates include calcium sulfate and magnesium sulfate (CaSO4, MgSO4). Since calcium sulfate does not dissolve in commonly used acids, it cannot be cleaned directly with acids (such as hydrochloric acid or nitric acid). However, the solubility product of calcium sulfate is greater than that of calcium carbonate, so when there is sufficient carbonate present, sulfates (such as calcium sulfate) can be converted into the corresponding carbonates, and then cleaned with hydrochloric acid, etc. Therefore, boilers with a large amount of sulfate scale need to be boiled with alkali (the alkali solution contains sodium carbonate) before acid cleaning.

    B, Carbonates mainly include calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate (CaSO4, MgSO4). Carbonate scale is relatively easy to dissolve and remove during acid cleaning.

    C, Phosphates include calcium phosphate [Ca(PO4)2], which is not high in content. The water in hydrothermal converters contains little phosphate, part of which comes from acid cleaning       agents, so when using phosphates as cleaning agents, they should not be used excessively.

    D, Silicates include calcium silicate and magnesium silicate (CaSiO3, MgSiO3). Silicates are not easily dissolved by commonly used acids (HCL, H2SO4), and only hydrofluoric acid has a special dissolving and cleaning function for silicate scale.

    E, Oxides   In addition to containing a large amount of inorganic salts, scale also contains a considerable amount of oxides (such as FeO, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, Fe(OH)2, etc.).
    F, Hydroxides include Mg(OH)2, Fe(OH)2, Fe(OH)3, etc.
